GAO investigates handling of suspected Arkansas nursing home abuse deaths

 November 16, 2004
In Arkansas, according to law, bodies no longer are able to go straight from the nursing home to the funeral  home. A coroner is called in and if nursing home abuse or neglect is suspected, the death is referred for  investigation. In some instances, severe mistreatment was suspected following examination, and Iowa  Republican Sen. Charles Grassley asked the General Accountability Office to investigate what happened after a  coroner indicated nursing home abuse was suspected.

The GAO investigators found Arkansas inspectors understated or overlooked serious problems and failed to  hold nursing homes accountable for some nursing home abuse neglect deaths. According to the GAO, far too  often state regulators do not punish offending nursing homes for instances of abuse and neglect.
