Nurses Face Multiple Charges of Elder Abuse, Neglect
February 7, 2007

Two former employees of the Good Samaritan Center Nursing Facility in Dowling Park, Florida, are facing multiple charges of elder abuse and neglect for withholding patient medication.

Melissa Elaine Bowen, 30, and Ashley Dawn Fralick, 27, came under investigation last October after the Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit received an abuse report.

The facility's management staff investigated the problem and discovered that the two nurses were withholding medications-for high blood pressure, depression, pain and other conditions-from patients, most of whom lacked the cognitive ability to know they were being deprived.

Investigators believe that the women were falsifying medication records to make it seem as though all of their patients were receiving their required medications.

Together the women face more than 25 counts of elder neglect, which constitutes a third-degree felony in Florida. If convicted, they could face years in prison and thousands of dollars of fines.
